Dorian in the Bahamas

Hurricane Dorian hit the Bahamas with 185 mph sustained wind and a central pressure of 910 millibars, tying it with the Labor Day Hurricane of 1935 for highest sustained winds at landfall in the Atlantic.

The mesoscale imager on the GOES-16 satellite had a stellar view. Still relatively new at the time, it was remarkable to watch it unfold in such detail. Most of the loop is images every minute, although it was coming in every 30 seconds during the early morning.

When I first started tracking hurricanes the images came along like once every half hour. While still stunning, you lose a lot of the whatโ€™s happening at that timescale.
